How To Treat Hyperactive Attention Deficit Children
I have a problem when someone is talking to me and I can hear other people talking near me. I find it really difficult to concentrate and focus on what that person is saying to me. I am fortunate in that I have never had hyperactive attention deficit. Children with this deficit or ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) have to cope with sights, sounds and images coming at them from all angles and therefore they find it impossible to focus, pay attention or sit still! Imagine looking through a kaleidoscope where colours and image are constantly changing and then being bombarded with loud music, announcements, radio, phones ringing. I bet you would find it almost impossible to focus or stay on task!
Hyperactive attention deficit children have a problem in that their brain chemicals seem to be a bit skewed which can lead to constant motion, inattentiveness and impulsiveness. This means that they find it difficult to adjust to regular routines which are imposed by our society and indeed in our home and family life. If they weren't some rules, anarchy would reign. That is why the ADHD child cannot fit in so easily. The impulsiveness can lead to these children being accident prone and also speaking out of turn so social, family and peer relationships are all negatively affected.
How do you treat hyperactive attention deficit children? I know some children who seem to have made great progress with the amphetamine type of drugs (Concerta, Strattera and Vyvanse) while I know of others who just could not put up with the side effects of weight loss, poor appetite and insomnia. But there are other alternatives such as a combination of Bach floral remedies ( Sweet and White Chestnut) and homeopathy which can be just as effective and they have no nasty side effects either. Other parents concentrate on diet and aim for less processed food and more complex carbohydrates and protein together with lots of fruit and vegetables. Avoiding the simple carbohydrates certainly helps the hyperactive child in avoiding sugar spikes and subsequent crashes. This certainly helps the child with distractability and over-excitability.
Behavior modification techniques which can be learnt from any decent child behavior program which help to set routines, reward programs, behavior charts and focuses on reinforcing good behavior through affectionate feedback and encouragement.
