Austin Fashion Week 2011 kicks off
Dim lights shadowed the crowd of spectators at the Cowboy Harley Davidson Showroom on Saturday night as the kickoff event for Austin Fashion Week began. Attendees mingled with drinks and hors d'oeuvres in hand (provided by Tito's Handmade Vodka and Suga Plump Pastries amongst others). The host, Mandy Dugan (CW Austin Star) set a light-hearted mood to the event, skipping onto a sleek black runway in shimmering gold heels and a short pink tulle dress, her loose curls bouncing behind her as she announced each segment.
The first, MotorClothes by Harley Davidson, was introduced through sound effects of a motorcycle revving up. Sixteen models demonstrated their casual wear, and walked with an attitude that matched the tough exterior of each predominantly skin-tight garment. Women strutted in tank tops and heels, while men dressed in sleek jackets and jeans. Illustrating a softer side to the collection were two toddlers modeling bashfully together. The boy wore a James Dean-esque outfit, while walking beside his female counterpart, who shone in glittery leggings.
Overall, the showcased Harley Davidson attire complemented a basic need for comfort, yet exemplified an edgy style that proved to be an appropriate transition for the next collection, renowned eccentric women's designer Betsey Johnson.
Johnson's collection mostly combined muted colors with loud prints, like red plaid blazers paired with black and white frills. However, vivid pieces stood out against the more subdued color palate, including a teal tutu and a couple of hot-pink party dresses. Accessories included the occasional brightly colored flower head piece, which balanced the black and white, and complemented the colors of the garments.
After the runway show concluded, the LC Rocks band provided live musical entertainment with covers to classic rock songs including Bon Jovi's "Shot Through the Heart" and Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll".
The third and final runway show celebrated Austin locals with looks put together by a total of 21 "Mash Up Teams" that included the categories of photographer, model, hairstylist, make-up artist, jewelry, and clothing designer. One notable model of the team "40" walked on the tip toes of her pointe shoes to introduce an elegantly long pastel gown, while the team's second look consisted of a child holding balloons to complement her navy blue dress with multicolored accents. Another highlight was "Anna * Stella", who proved to be the only team featuring a plus-sized model. She wore a turquoise knee-length belted dress.
Toward the end of the segment, a small mishap occurred when model for "Wolf Pack", Dalia Drake, accidentally tripped and fell in her stilettos. However, both the crowd and Drake remained positive – cheering as she regained composure, walking the rest of the runway with boldness and determination.
Winners will be decided through the popularity of online votes, and receive an award at the Austin Fashion Awards on Saturday, Aug 27.
One onlooker, Elizabeth Ojeh, who owns a fashion house in Nigeria (House of Victoria), came in hopes of "seeing where the fashion scene is headed." Thus, with each of the "Mash Up Teams" showing their own promise and creativity, it is evident that Austin - already known as the Live Music Capital of the World, is, in its own unique way, quickly becoming a force in terms of fashion.
And appropriately so, because as front-row attendee and local radio/television personality Anne Hudson said, "music is an art that is addressed in fashion."
So, whether you were a fixture in the local social scene like Hudson, (who sat with friend Ashley Hargrove, founder of the personal shopping business Dressed to Kill) or an international visitor like Ojeh, the kickoff event proved to be an exhilarating start to the week ahead, fusing a cultural bond, immersed in an equal and universal love for fashion.
