Selecting Kitchen Worktops

There is a children's game where someone starts by drawing a head and folding the paper over. Someone then draws the top half of the body with arms and folds that over. The next person draws the bottom half of the body with legs and the final person draws the feet. When the whole thing is unfolded you have a head with ginger hair and glasses on a soldier's uniform tunic with ballerina legs and frogman flippers on the feet.

Selecting a new kitchen style can be somewhat like this, although without the comic consequences. Once you have selected the style and colour of the new kitchen you want perhaps the next most important decision is which of the many types of kitchen worktops you will choose. Also what type of splash-back? Will it match the worktop? Will it be tiles and if so what colour? Or perhaps it could be glass?

There are an almost limitless number of combinations that can be made and this will ensure that even though someone may have a similar kitchen to yours it will not be exactly the same so you can maintain your sense of individuality.

Selecting kitchen worktops is not, however, just a matter of choosing the colour but also goes back to the fundamentals of the kitchen design. By its very nature the work top is ultimately where it all happens in the kitchen so it is important to get it right.

First of all there needs to be enough of it. Unless you have a kitchen the size of a small country it is always a good idea to include as much worktop space in the design as possible. You can never have too much. Appliances will expand to fill the available space and on day one you think you have acres but once you have added the toaster, the kettle station, the coffee machine, the bread making machine, the bread bin etc. the space is soon whittled down. If space is limited then look at some clever ways to gain some back. Put the microwave on a shelf, same with the cookbooks. Try and plan to keep the surfaces clear.

The next is to ensure that it is in the right space. It is always a good idea to put workspace either side of the cooker, especially the oven, so that as things are removed you have some place to put them down.

With this in mind all kitchen worktops should be able to handle heat because at some stage in a busy kitchen they will be subjected to it.

This is one of the attributes in the kitchen worktops that we at Wickes supply. They may be solid wood, earthstone, which is an acrylic layer on a chipboard core, or a laminate top but all are durable and long lasting and will give years of hard wear and use.

So, it does not matter whether you want to re-create the latest Jamie Oliver recipe or just make beans on toast - having the right kitchen worktop will be an asset.

How much are they at the store? I have an outdoor closet full of them. Some are dusty, but I can sell them through the newpaper. How much should I sell them for?

Answer:

My uncle is a handyman. He says that at the Home Depot in Miami you can get 50 tiles of 4 square inches for $30.00. He says that you should sell it for the same price. You do the math.
