Learn What Airsoft Parts Are Available Part 2
In this article, you will find out about the different airsoft parts available to upgrade your gun. This is part 1 of a 3 part series. As you will soon find out, there are a variety of parts you can buy to upgrade your Airsoft AEG. This article will talk about piston heads bushings, shims, pistons, and gears.
Piston. The basic job of the piston is to compress air in the cylinder. It's basically a flat-tooth gear. This is what happens in an AEG gearbox; the motor turns the gears which then engage the piston and moves it back until the spring is fully compressed. Once the spring is fully compressed, the piston disengages the gears and flys forward compressing air in the cylinder. This puts a ton of pressure on the airsoft piston. It's good to have a metal piston in your AEG if you primarily shoot semi-auto, but if you often shoot full-auto, you run the risk of your gears being stripped.
Piston Head. The purpose of a piston head is to seal air into the cylinder. You can purchase silent piston heads and also piston heads with ball bearings, which help to increase the FPS of your AEG.
Gears. There are three separate gears in an airsoft gearbox: the spur gear, the sector gear, and the bevel gear. Airsoft Gears are probably one of the more expensive upgrades for an gun. When you run a high torque or speed setup, you should use steel gears in your gearbox so that you gears will not break. If you have a high torque setup, you should use helical gears because high torque setups are what they are specifically designed for. Helical gears are also quieter than standard gears.
Bushings. The purpose of airsoft bushings is to keep the gears in place and allow them to rotate. Most AEGs come stock with 6mm plastic bushings, but it's a good idea to replace them with metal bushings. For higher torque or speed setups, a new gearbox shell that uses 7mm or 8mm bushings would be good.
Shims. In order for your gears to stay aligned and correctly meshed, your gearbox has shims. Your motor will get worn out if you shim your gearbox to tightly. If your shimming is to loose, the gears may break.
